Dawod Named Associate Director of Stroke at UPMC Shadyside

Pittsburgh, October 17, 2022 – Judy Dawod, MD, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh department of neurology, has accepted the position of associate director of stroke at UPMC Shadyside. As associate director, Dr. Dawod will work in conjunction with Matthew T. Starr, MD, the associate director of the UPMC Stroke Institute, to continue to provide medical oversight to the Shadyside Stroke Program. In addition to being a stroke attending on staff at the Shadyside campus, Dr. Dawod will also participate in the collaborative stroke team meetings, perform medical case reviews, provide education to trainees and assist in preparations for the upcoming Joint Commission (TJC) Primary Stroke Recertification Survey in the fall of 2023.

Dr. Dawod hails from Damascus, Syria, where she attended medical school and initial neurology residency at the University of Damascus. After completing her residency, she moved to the United States and completed a neurology residency and vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Arizona before completing a StrokeNet fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Her StrokeNet fellowship included NIH-funded research.

After finishing her time in Philadelphia, Dr. Dawod joined the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC in 2021 as assistant professor neurology where she is currently participating in NeuroNext, a research fellowship funded by the NIH.

Dr. Dawod’s current research interests are stroke in cancer patients and strokes due to hypercoagulability, which is an excellent match for the stroke population at UPMC Shadyside.
