Department Researchers Receive Awards from AHA

Pittsburgh, March 29, 2022 – Hongjian Pu, MD, and Shanshan Song, MD, research assistant professors with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology, have both received Career Development Awards from the American Heart Association.

Dr. Pu received the award for his grant “Adiponectin ameliorates chronic hypoperfusion induced vascular dementia.” Dr. Song received the award for her grant “Modulating microglia-oligodendrocyte interactions for white matter repair.” She will be studying the mechanisms of microglia-olugodendrocyte interactions on white matter remyelination and neurological function recovery after ischemic stroke.

Over the course of the three-year grants, Drs. Pu and Song will both receive a total amount of $231,000 in research support.

The Career Development Award is a prestigious grant that supports a junior faculty’s career development, allowing them to explore research questions or studies that will bolster future success as an independent scientist.
