Michael Zigmond, PhD

  • Professor Emeritus

Dr. Zigmond has retired from the University of Pittsburgh, where he and his research team led studies of cellular and animal models to examine Parkinson's disease (PD) and aging. During his 48-year career at the University he focused on the compensatory responses to partial loss of striatal dopamine, the dopaminergic influence of neurotrophic factors such as GDNF, the neuroprotective impact of physical exercise and of environmental enrichment, and the neurotoxic effects of isolation.

He remains active as a teacher and mentor and is also pursuing several writing projects, and can still be reached at zigmond@pitt.edu.
