Message from the Program Directors

UPMC Neurology Residency Program University of Pittsburgh resident directorWe are very pleased with your interest in the neurology residency training program at the University of Pittsburgh. We offer comprehensive training in both clinical and basic science aspects of neurology, and abundant opportunities for research. We are a categorical program with eight residency positions available each year. We also offer ACGME-approved fellowship programs in Clinical Neurophysiology and Vascular Neurology, non-ACGME accredited programs in Vascular Neurology, Interventional Neurology, Movement Disorders, Headache Medicine and Epilepsy. Our faculty is well balanced including physician-scientists and subspecialty-trained physicians who not only provide our residents with clinical and basic scientific training but also offer expanded opportunities for research.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is a regional and national referral center, and the resulting patient population represents a broad spectrum of interesting neurological disorders both common and uncommon. Such a wide and varied patient population lends itself to extensive hands-on patient exposure for our residents.

UPMC Neurology Residency Program University of Pittsburgh resident director Robert G. Kaniecki, MDA unique feature of our program for starting PGY-2 residents is neurology “boot camp.” This is a month-long intensive introduction to neurology that has been enthusiastically received by the residents. We also offer an extremely comprehensive didactic program throughout the year to complement clinical experience.

The collegial atmosphere that exists between our residents and faculty is most gratifying and is a major attribute of our program. Our goal is to foster strong relationships among the residents and between residents and faculty to promote lifelong academic collaborations and lifelong friendships.

Finally, please take a moment to learn about living in Pittsburgh. The city is home to the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and many other prominent institutions of higher learning. We host a world-class symphony and renowned opera, ballet, and theatre organizations and the cost of living remains remarkably reasonable. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins offer year-round professional sports and promote the community spirit which unites enthusiasts. Western Pennsylvania offers abundant opportunities for outdoor sports and activities amidst beautiful natural surroundings. All that the city and surrounding areas have to offer further enhance the residency experience in Pittsburgh.

We hope that as you explore our website we will pique your interest in our program, and we look forward to meeting many of you.

Sincerely,
Ajitesh Ojha, MD, Program Director
