Medical coverage is available for residents and their families at a minimum cost to the resident as is dental and eye care coverage (UPMC Health plan is available at minimum cost based on the type of plan selected).

Each resident gets 4 weeks of vacation per year that is to be taken during elective rotations. It is preferred that this time is taken in 2-week blocks although if it would be necessary to have it in week blocks, every effort would be made to accommodate that need.

The department provides $1000 per year in education funds to PGY2, PGY3, and PGY4 neurology residents. These funds can be used for travel, conference registration or courses, books or also to buy ipad/laptops. The department promotes and supports scholarly activities for the resident, so a separate fund is available to any resident who presents at a national meeting which covers travel to and from, one night’s lodging and conference registration. At the beginning PGY1 receive $500 as book fund. Residents have moonlighting opportunities as well.

UPMC offers a competitive retirement matching program for those who choose to do so. UPMC qualifies as a non-profit for loan forgiveness purposes.
