Neurology Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The UPMC Neurology Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was initiated by our residents to address issues of equity in underrepresented communities, foster cultural competency across our department, and provide the best care possible for our patients. We aim to create a collaborative environment that is responsive towards the communities we work in and serve by addressing systems of privilege based on race, culture, spiritual beliefs, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age and physical ability. Our active initiatives include recruiting more physicians from diverse backgrounds, participating in mentorship programs to increase interest in medicine and neurology, creating more equitable departmental policies, providing support and training to address bias, conflict, and microaggressions, and promoting opportunities to work with the underserved at locations such as the Birmingham Free Clinic in Pittsburgh. We hope you will share in these efforts for growth and lasting change.
