Presbyterian University Hospital
Presbyterian University Hospital (PUH) is a major medical teaching hospital and referral center containing 1,042 beds. It is here that residents are exposed to a wide variety of neurological disorders. There are multiple intensive care units within PUH, including medical, surgical, general trauma, cardiothoracic, neurovascular/neurosurgical, and neurotrauma. The patients admitted to the Neurology Ward and Stroke services reside in PUH and about half of the patients seen by the Neurology Consult service will be admitted here under other primary services. There is extensive access to neurodiagnostic services including 1.5 and 3T MRI, cerebral angiography/interventional neuroradiology, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), Nuclear SPECT imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), Magnetoencephalogram (MEG), state-of-the-art electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) laboratories, and an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU).
Montefiore Hospital
Montefiore Hospital (MUH) is the sister hospital of PUH containing 560 beds. Despite being separated by a city block, MUH and PUH are connected by an indoor walkway. Inpatient services for Internal Medicine, Otolaryngology (ENT), Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Transplantation Medicine are located here. Additionally, the transplant ICU is housed within MUH. Heart, liver, lung, renal, pancreas, multi-organ, and extremity transplantation are supported. Some of the patients on the Neurology Consult service will be admitted here under other primary services.
The Pittsburgh Veteran's Affairs Medical Center
The Pittsburgh Veteran's Affairs (VA) Medical Center is a very large facility serving the medical needs of veterans across western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. The Pittsburgh VA is the regional "hub" in the hub and spokes model of medical care used nationally by the Department of Veteran's Affairs and acts as a referral center for "spoke" VAs in the region. For this reason, residents are exposed to a broad range of pathology, both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Additionally, many neurodiagnostic modalities are available including MRI, EMG, and EEG. Residents are also given dedicated procedural time for outpatient lumbar punctures one half-day per week while on service.
Lillian Kaufmann Medical Building
The 8th floor of the Lillian Kaufmann Medical Building (LKB) is the location of most of the Department of Neurology outpatient clinics. Exceptions to this are the Pediatric Neurology Clinic located at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Neuroimmunology/Multiple Sclerosis Center located at Magee Women's Hospital. Residents work in the clinic alongside an attending preceptor seeing patients as part of their General Neurology Resident Continuity clinic. Exam rooms are updated and fully equipped with all the basic neurological tools as well as access to TeleNeurology services. The clinic also contains separate workrooms where residents can confidentially discuss cases with preceptors.
The 12th floor of LKB is home to one of the two resident lounges with 12 separate computer workspaces, a kitchenette, living space, call room, bathroom, and private locker storage. Additionally, the offices of the medical school clerkship, residency, and fellowship coordinators are located here.
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) is the major Pediatric teaching hospital and referral center of the western and central Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio regions containing 313 beds, including a large 36-bed pediatric intensive care unit. The hospital also contains an 8-bed EMU and 24hr access to advanced neurodiagnostic modalities, including portable computed tomography (CT) scanners, bedside head ultrasound, MRI, and bedside EEG. Residents rotate through both inpatient and outpatient services here and have exposure to a wide variety of both common and rare neurological disorders, including many neurodevelopmental disorders. Residents work in spacious cubicles alongside highly specialized, renowned fellows and faculty, who are readily available and eager to teach trainees at all levels.
Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic
Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) is the major psychiatric university hospital and center for psychiatric research in the region. Located across the street from PUH, it is connected by an underground walkway. The facility houses inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services for both adult and pediatric patients. Some of the patients on the Neurology Consult service will be admitted here under Psychiatry. Residents rotate here for one month as a mandatory portion of their fourth year of training; however, Psychiatry can be taking as an elective by residents in any year of training.
Hillman Cancer Center/UPMC Shadyside
Hillman Cancer Center/UPMC Shadyside is a short 10-minute drive from UPMC PUH and hosts the mandatory Neuro-Oncology elective. During this time, Neurology residents will see patients with primary CNS malignancies, secondary CNS metastases, paraneoplastic neurological disorders, and neurological complications of chemotherapy/radiation.
Magee Women’s Hospital
Magee Women’s Hospital (MWH) is a major hospital for obstetrics and gynecology within the Western Pennsylvania region and is home to UPMC's OB/GYN Residency Training Program. Services include reproductive health and planning, maternal/fetal medicine, labor and delivery, obstetrical intensive care, medical intensive care, and cancer care for breast and gynecological cancers. MWH is also home to the Neuroimmunology/Multiple Sclerosis Center where Neurology residents can rotate through on elective. Neurology residents are also highly encouraged to rotate through the Women's Neurology elective, which is based at MWH.
