Biographical Sketch
Dr. Raul G. Nogueira completed his neurology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School program in 2002. He subsequently pursued fellowship training in Vascular Neurology, Neurocritical Care, and Neurointerventional Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remained on the faculty for five years.
He then moved to Atlanta to lead the Neuroendovascular and Neurocritical Care services at the newly established Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University School of Medicine. Under his leadership, Grady emerged as one of the nation’s leading comprehensive stroke centers, achieving one of the highest thrombectomy volumes of any single hospital in the United States while becoming a recognized center for pioneering stroke innovations and a leading recruiter in major clinical trials.
In early 2022, after 11.5 years at Emory University, Dr. Nogueira moved to Pittsburgh as the Inaugural Endowed Professor and Division Chief of Cerebrovascular Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of the UPMC Stroke Institute. Since his arrival, the UPMC Stroke Institute has more than doubled the size of its stroke faculty, substantially expanded its clinical and telestroke coverage capabilities, and strengthened its educational and research programs, further integrating high-quality stroke care across the UPMC system.
Dr. Nogueira is board certified in Neurology, Neurocritical Care, Neurosonology, and Neurointerventional Surgery. He is a founder and Past President of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN), designed the SVIN Registry and serves as its Emeritus Chair, and is the former Editor-in-Chief of Interventional Neurology, SVIN’s first scientific journal.
A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Nogueira has trained and inspired numerous residents and clinical and research fellows who have gone on to become leaders in stroke and neurovascular care. He has lectured in nearly 30 countries and is Co-Director of the iCURE Stroke course, which over the past seven years has become a major international educational platform in stroke and has attracted participants from more than 40 countries. He is also a regular faculty member at many of the leading international stroke and neuroendovascular educational forums, including LINNC, WLNC, ALICE, and SLICE. He has been actively involved in the Stroke Treatment Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) initiative and serves as Neurology Co-Director of the Acute Reperfusion Therapies and Imaging in Stroke Evolution (ARISE) initiative, both of which bring together academic leaders and key representatives from the NIH, FDA, and industry to advance stroke research and innovation.
Dr. Nogueira is an internationally recognized clinical investigator with an extensive network of collaborators across North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has held leadership roles in many of the pivotal studies that have shaped modern stroke thrombectomy and cerebrovascular care. He has served as Principal Investigator or in other senior leadership roles for numerous trials and registries, including TREVO-2, Penumbra 3D Separator, DAWN, BEST, RESILIENT, ATTENTION, ENDOLOW, PROST, ORIENTAL-MeVO, WE-TRUST, IMPERATIVE, MARRS, Rapid-Pulse, RESILIENT-Extend, DUSK, RESILIENT-DIRECT-TNK, RESILIENT-EXTEND-IV, IAT-TOP, PEARL, ANGEL-COAST, IAT-BOOST, and the EXCELLENT Registry. He has also served on the Steering Committees of pivotal trials including SWIFT, SWIFT PRIME, ARISE-II, DEVT, CLEAR, CHARM, ATTENTION-IA, ATTENTION-IV, ATTENTION-Late, ASSET-IT, BRIDGE-TNK, RESCUE BT, RESCUE BT2, INSTANT, POST-TNK, POST-UK, MARVEL, SUMMIT MAX, and ATHENA; contributed to major multicenter registries including TREVO, ATTENTION, and BASILAR; and played leadership roles in the VERITAS and AURORA international collaborations. He is also one of the Global Multi-Principal Investigators of the NIH STEP Platform Trial.
A pioneer in cerebrovascular medicine and neurotechnology, Dr. Nogueira has helped advance multiple transformative technologies, including stent retrievers for mechanical thrombectomy, artificial intelligence applications in stroke care, neuroendovascular robotic surgery, nanotechnology-based approaches to stroke reperfusion, and neuroendovascular implantation of brain-computer interface devices. Together with Dr. Mohammad Doheim, a former mentee and now collaborator, he founded HORUS NeuroTechnologies and the NeuroPrecision Lab to foster innovation, translational research, and entrepreneurship at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering, and endovascular therapy.
Dr. Nogueira has authored more than 700 peer-reviewed publications, including first- and senior-author articles in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, and other leading scientific journals.
At UPMC, Dr. Nogueira is committed to advancing the Stroke Institute’s mission to serve its communities and lead the transformation of stroke care. His priorities include ensuring rapid access to world-class acute stroke treatment across the UPMC system, advancing innovative neurovascular research and technologies, and educating and mentoring the next generation of leaders in cerebrovascular medicine.
