Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, the city of Pittsburgh dazzles with its variety of neighborhoods and natural beauty. 

The City of Bridges is the 27th largest metropolitan area in the United States with nearly 2.5 million people. According to Wallethub’s 2022 Healthiest & Unhealthiest Cities in America list, Pittsburgh ranked 29 out of 182 of the most populated cities in the United States; it's also one of the most livable, affordable cities in the country with a diverse architectural community. Pittsburgh is proud to be a city of interconnected neighborhoods where communities are close-knit, and families cherish their traditions.

The twenty-first century has brought extensive development to the area, with a significant shift away from heavy industry and a new emphasis on biomedical, biotechnical, and applied-technology enterprises. Several office towers, a convention center, and a 600-room international hotel have been built during this period to support the changing economic base. Research is quickly becoming one of Pittsburgh’s largest industries thanks to over 150 laboratories and more than 7,500 scientists and engineers; USX, Westinghouse, Alcoa, H.J. Heinz, Bayer, and Mellon Bank are a few of the corporations that make their base of operations Downttown Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is home to a rich and varied Cultural District, which allow residents to witness the wealth of entertainment options the city has to offer. Organizations such as the world-renown Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and more put on professional productions and events that draw in a significant amount of entertainment and tourism both locally, statewide and nationally. The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh – Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center and the Andy Warhol Museum – showcase art exhibitions from unknown to well-known, famous artists.

For the sports lovers in all of us, rest assured knowing that Pittsburgh is known as the City of Champions, and no aspect of the city inspires more enthusiasm than its sports. Home to the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers and the MLB's Pittsburgh Pirates, these teams have won multiple Stanley Cups, Super Bowls and World Series.

Stipend and Benefits

UPMC offers a competitive residency stipend, which is listed below for each PGY level. Stipend levels are adjusted each year. Because the cost of living in Pittsburgh is still below average compared to the rest of the country, residents in this program can purchase homes while still maintaining a certain amount of disposable income.

Every year department of neurology PGY-4, PGY-3 and PGY-2 residents receive $1000 in education funds – these funds typically are allocated to things such as travel, conference registration fees or other necessary items a resident might need for academic or research purposes. PGY-1 residents receive a $500 book fund.

Medical, dental and eye care coverage is available to residents and their families at a minimum cost through which ever UPMC Health Plan is selected.
